Oxygen Evolution, Light Flashes, Carotenoids Photosynthetic oxygen evolution from photosystem II particles was analyzed as conse quence of a train of short (5 îs) flashes of different light quality and different intensities to study cyclic electron flow around photosystem II. Damped oscillations of the amplitudes of 0 2-evolution corresponding to a flash sequence were fitted numerically and analyzed in terms of a nonhomogeneous distribution of misses, represented by the probability parameter ctj. Application of red light, known to promote cyclic electron flow around photosystem II (Grus zecki et al., 1995) results in a considerable increase of all a{, indicating that at the molecular level the misses may be interpreted as resulting from a competition for the reduction of oxidized P680 between cyclic electron flow and the electron flow coming from the water splitting enzyme. In accordance with previous findings, application of light flashes of the spectrum covering the absorption region of carotenoids resulted in an inhibition of cyclic electron flow and a pronounced decrease of the level of the miss parameter. Possible molecu lar mechanisms for the activity control of this cyclic electron transport around photosystem II by carotenoids are discussed.

Involvement of state transitions in the switch between linear and cyclic electron flow in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The energetic metabolism of photosynthetic organisms is profoundly influenced by state transitions and cyclic electron flow around photosystem I. The former involve a reversible redistribution of the light-harvesting antenna between photosystem I and photosystem II and optimize light energy utilization in photosynthesis whereas the latter process modulates the photosynthetic yield. We have used...

Induction of Photosynthetic Carbon Fixation in Anoxia Relies on Hydrogenase Activity and Proton-Gradient Regulation-Like1-Mediated Cyclic Electron Flow in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The model green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is frequently subject to periods of dark and anoxia in its natural environment. Here, by resorting to mutants defective in the maturation of the chloroplastic oxygen-sensitive hydrogenases or in Proton-Gradient Regulation-Like1 (PGRL1)-dependent cyclic electron flow around photosystem I (PSI-CEF), we demonstrate the sequential contribution of ...

Regulation of Photosynthetic Electron Transport and Photoinhibition

Photosynthetic organisms and isolated photosystems are of interest for technical applications. In nature, photosynthetic electron transport has to work efficiently in contrasting environments such as shade and full sunlight at noon. Photosynthetic electron transport is regulated on many levels, starting with the energy transfer processes in antenna and ending with how reducing power is ultimate...

Changes in photosynthetic electron transfer and state transitions in an herbicide-resistant D1 mutant from soybean cell cultures.

Anomalies in photosynthetic activity of the soybean cell line STR7, carrying a single mutation (S268P) in the chloroplastic gene psbA that codes for the D1 protein of the photosystem II, have been examined using different spectroscopic techniques. Thermoluminescence emission experiments have shown important differences between STR7 mutant and wild type cells. The afterglow band induced by both ...

Studies on the Nature of the Primary Reactions of Photosystem II in Photosynthesis II. The Modification of the Functional Integrity of the Photochemical Active Centers of System II by a-Bromo-a-benzyl-Malodinitril and Accompanying Effects on Chloroplasts

The effect of a-bromo-a-benzylmalodinitril (BBMD) on the oxygen evolution and on the ab sorption changes at 515 nm and 704 nm has been investigated in spinach chloroplasts. It has been found: 1. Under repetitive flash excitation conditions, where the back reaction around system II is practically excluded for kinetical reasons, BBMD does not restore the 515 nm absorption change in DCMU poisoned...
